A selection of my images from Lichgate on High Road, estate of the late Dr. Laura Jepson, Florida State University professor for some 30 years. It comprises three wooded acres near the FSU campus and the center of Tallahassee, state capital of Florida. The lichgate serves as the gateway between the Tudor cottage she built and the open area where a very special live oak tree has resided for over 300 years. The Lichgate Oak is the most beautiful I've ever seen, and this place - the oak, the gardens, the cottage and the lichgate - has a wonderfully magical air about it. Dedicated volunteers take loving care of it all. 50% of the sales from this gallery will be donated to the Laura Jepson Institute to assist with their efforts.
A lichgate, practically speaking, is a covered porch-like structure, traditionally placed between the church and the cemetery and used as a resting place for the pall bearers waiting for the graveside services to start. It is also the portal between two realms - the realm of here and now and the realm of the past, of history and memory, and a connection to the hereafter. "In the end some find the way home - through the Wardrobe, the Looking Glass, or perhaps through the Lichgate." ~ from the website, www.lichgate.com
