Description
A lichgate, practically speaking, is a covered porch-like structure, traditionally placed between the church and the cemetery and used as a resting place for the pall bearers waiting for the graveside services to start. It is also the portal between two realms - the realm of here and now and the realm of the past, of history and memory, and a connection to the hereafter. This lichgate was built by a very special woman, the late Dr. Laura Jepson, Florida State University professor for some 30 years. It is located on her estate, three wooded acres near the FSU campus and the center of Tallahassee, state capital of Florida. It serves as the gateway between the Tudor cottage she built and the open area where a very special live oak tree has resided for over 300 years. The Lichgate Oak is the most beautiful I've ever seen, and this place - the oak, the gardens, the cottage and the lichgate - has a wonderfully magical air about it. Dedicated volunteers take loving care of it all. "In the end some find the way home - through the Wardrobe, the Looking Glass, or perhaps through the Lichgate." ~ from the website, www.lichgate.com

Fame alert! :-) I 1st saw this shot on PINTEREST! So what happened was I just now saw your comment about my GOAT IN A BOX NABISCO, thank you! That was a great day finding a rural Mexican brick pen with about 6 goats , friendly and curious. So this led me to your page/portfolio where I recognized this one in particular(I have to check I may have been 1 of the original dinners & forgotten I did it, but I know it's on a board of mine now!! Anyway, I have a 7-8yr.old photo of my aunt and uncle ,who lived in Kent, I shot in front of a Lynch gate somewhere near Wallsingham's birthplace I think-if that's any help :) This one is really beautiful. Saturation is more achievable in England when skies are overcast so aperature gets open more-trick I learned from shooting in the rain like a mad dog right? ;) Your Green capture here's eye-catching. Do you have more views of it or of the estate behind it? Enjoyed your story about this particular gate, always a joy to capture history along with beauty! {These ferns look like Boston ferns but grow like Foxtail ferns, lush & straight upright.}

Hi Pamela, thanks for visiting and for your kind comments. In response to your question, I made a gallery on my profile page of Dr. Jepson's estate. The gallery and the estate are called Lichgate On High Road. There are just a few images now but more to come. I can relate to shooting in the English rain. I'm told the climate in western UK is quite similar to the Pacific Northwest, where I lived and learned photography. The damp air does bring out colors, and I think greens especially because it nurtures such a lush landscape. This image was shot at the end of a very drizzly gray day not unlike most days in Seattle, but this is in Tallahassee, Florida, and you can stop by and see it in person if you drive down for a vacation. I think these robust ferns are Bostons, but I could be wrong. I remember seeing this pinned or repinned a few times - I tend to neglect my Pinterest page and really should give it more attention.
