About Kathi Shotwell
Art is communication, and no art is finished until it is shared. It is my pleasure to share mine with you here.
I love the light. The way it caresses shapes and forms. The way it can stop motion or enhance it. The way it can hide things in shadows or highlights... and reveal them to those who look closely. I love colors, but a lot of times you can see the light better without the distraction of many colors. My portfolio has some of everything, and a lot of monochrome.

I sold my first photograph in 1975 and kept a camera in my hand ever since, making pictures and learning through various classes and finally a BFA from Sonoma State University in Northern California. I started with traditional black and white silver prints and mixed media, and made the switch to digital in 2001. I have exhibited across Canada and the U.S., earned a few awards at shows along the way, and sold work for portraits, portfolios, advertising, and websites.
I want to share an old poem describing photography -- the old-fashioned kind -- in a way that still gives me shivers when I read it. Thank you for your interest in my work.
CAMERA
Light disperses the silver
on film in the shadow
and memory is trapped
in the blink of an eyelash.
The kiss, the laugh, the poised hoof
are framed in an instant.
A century ago Daguerre dipped a pencil
in the eye of the sun
and etched an image of man
on the surface of metal,
making the past present
and the dead men to linger
pursuing the living
with love from the lintel.
Memory clings to the wall
bent sapling, hair blowing
mast bent to the starboard.
The wind forever in motion
because time stumbles in darkness
on a splinter of light.
