Description
An ancient live oak on Florida's east coast, the Fairchild Oak is about 60 feet tall and 300 feet wide. Some of its branches dip down into the ground and come back up. It is believed to be the biggest in the South. Modern experts believe the Fairchild Oak is between 400 and 500 years old. It has survived hurricanes, lightning, logging, and war. It was spared from early logging by its location on a plantation, and witnessed the destruction of that plantation in 1835 in the 2nd Seminole War. If you visit it alone and sit very still, you can almost hear it whispering stories from its memory.
